Cyndi Lauper! The True Colors Residence, a project of West End Intergenerational Residence and partners Cyndi Lauper and her manager Lisa Barbaris, is slated to open in Central Harlem this summer (2011). True Colors will be the first permanent, supportive housing facility for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in New York State. A Letter from Cyndi Lauper: "In New York City, a very disproportionate number (up to 40%), of homeless youth identify as LGBT. Even more disturbing are reports that these young people often face discrimination and at times physical assault in some of the very places they have to for help. This is shocking and inexcusable! That's why my manager, Lisa Barbaris and I are collaborating with Colleen Jackson and West End Intergenerational Residence to create the True Colors Residence, (TCR), a permanent supportive housing program for homeless LGBT youth 18-24 years old. We'll be building from the ground up so our residents will have a brand new, modern building with studio apartments for each resident and both indoor and outdoor community space to socialize or attend education and recreation programs. Each resident will be responsible for paying affordable rent based on their income and will receive ongoing assistance in obtaining employment best suited to their individual interests and skills. Although TCR will not require participation in it's programs, a variety of social and educational support services will be available to all who request them. Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy, and successful individuals they were meant to be. As longtime supporters, Lisa and I know that West End has been a trailblazing forward-thinking organization that is willing to do whatever is necessary to serve those in need. Their services have, in our experience, always met the highest standards. I am proud to work with Colleen and West End on such an exciting and important project as the True Colors Residence and I ask for your support as we move forward." As a child, I can recall camping trips to Ithaca, visiting Buttermilk Falls and Robert H. Treman State Park. Riding bikes and swimming during the day, then eating smores while laying flat on the picnic table staring at the blanket of starts glistening in the clear night sky. It wasn’t until much later in life when I was able to appreciate the fascinating culture and delectable diversity offered in a community as gorgeous as Ithaca. It is no surprise to me that Ithaca made the list as “Most Liberal Places in America” by www.epodunk.com, or that The Utne Reader named the city “America’s most enlightened Town.” Home to the prestigious Ivy League Cornell University, it would not be unusual to see a local walking through the infamous Ithaca Commons with dreadlocks, a backpack and no shoes in this college town. But amidst a flurry of messages from readers who had stumbled across his website, I'm From Driftwood, he secretly longed for a flesh and blood connection---the kind he couldn't get replying to emails from his bedroom in Brooklyn. That's when he got the idea to take the operation on the road. Nathan enlisted his trusty video story editor and friend Marquise, and his brother Nick offered to drive the van. The trio would roam the country from state to state and host readings where they would share stories from that region and have discussions with the locals about their experiences. To read the entire article, click: http://www.calameo.com/read/000390467541dafb755b3 Members of New York’s GLBT community were not the only ones celebrating the state’s June 24, 2011 legalization of gay marriage. Exclusiv Vodka showed its support for the bill’s passing and for the entire GLBT community by launching a new cocktail called “The Big Apple Together.” This cocktail features the distiller’s Classic Vodka and Rose Moscato sparkling red wine, which was just released in the U.S. this month. Exclusiv Vodka chose the cocktail’s name as a reference to New York City’s nickname, the Big Apple, and to the drink’s delicious apple flavor. The name also shows that Exclusiv Vodka and New York are united together in fighting for GLBT’s equal rights. Exclusiv’s new cocktail will be a hit at parties celebrating the historical bill’s passing, and it uses vodka that won silver at this year’s L.A. Wine and Spirits Competition. Here is the recipe for Exclusiv Vodka’s celebration cocktail: The Big Apple Together 1 part Classic Exclusiv Vodka 1 part Apple schnapps 1 part cranberry juice Shaken into a martini glass and topped with Exclusiv Moscato. About Exclusiv Vodka: Exclusiv is a renowned vodka-distiller and wine-cultivator based in Moldova, a country that just gained its independence from Russia in 1991. The manufacturer’s products are steeped in Russian tradition and new to the United States. Exclusiv’s low-priced vodka has won nine international awards that prove its ranking among the most famous names in vodka. Exclusiv’s Rose Moscato sparkling red wine gained great popularity around Russia, and is now available in the United States as of this month. You can become an Exclusiv Facebook fan at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/ExclusivVodka and find more info on the company at http://www.exclusiv-vodka.com/ |
